To some, it often understood that there are three distinct stages of smoking a cigar, also known as ‘the rule of thirds’.

Stage one is described as “The Hay.” This is the opening of the cigar and typically has a grassy newness to it.

This first third of a cigar is typically not a great representation of its true character. Think of it like an orchestra performing sound check and warming up before actually playing live. During this stage, you’re lighting it, checking the burn and making sure the draw is consistent. Typically there are too many ancillary things going on to truly appreciate all nuances within the cigar at this juncture.

Stage two is commonly referred to as, “The Heaven.” This – is true flavor country, my friends. At this stage the cigar is burning right and the smoke has permeated the entire cigar from top to bottom. This section is where the orchestra is in full swing and pretty much every distinct flavor can be fully appreciated in both taste and aroma.

If the first section is all about the grass, this is the section where common flavors like chocolate, nuts, cherries, cream or coffee leap to the forefront. You never want this third to end; but alas, like all things it must.

The second third of a cigar is typically regarded as the ‘sweet spot’.

At this stage the cigar is burning right and the smoke has permeated the entire cigar from top to bottom. This section is where the orchestra is in full swing and pretty much every distinct flavor can be fully appreciated in both taste and aroma.”

The 3 parts of a cigar smoking experience

The third section is called numerous things such as “The Dirt” or even “The Hell.” By this point we’ve reached the finale – not much cigar left to work with. Because of the shortened length, the fire is close, making for a hotter smoke and a warmer stick to hold. The subtle flavors are now overpowered by whatever the main flavor of the cigar is by this point.

We are confronted with a problem of sorts, which is whether to continue and smoke this to the nub knowing that the best parts of the cigar are behind it, or simply discard it and let it burn out on its own.

Usually we continue hoping for just a little more of the flavors and attributes that made us enjoy the first two thirds, but much like staying in a relationship for too long its best days are behind it – but when it was great, it was truly great.

The nub: do you get down this deep?

This is the circle of cigar life and the true addiction of the hobby –  always chasing that second third. For we will tolerate the first and linger on the finale, hoping for just a few more inches of greatness.
