Somewhere in the 1950s, the world fell head over heels for vodka.

While so-called ‘brown spirits’ like whiskey and brandy were experiencing a gradual decline in popularity, vodka was being mixed up everywhere.

The Vodka Martini was the preferred drink of James Bond. The Moscow Mule, the Screwdriver and the Bloody Mary were among the most popular cocktails of the day. Whereas whiskey was said to remain on your breath, vodka did not.

Hence the Smirnoff campaign “Smirnoff leaves you breathless”.

A 1967 Smirnoff Vodka campaign

Fast forward to the most recent cocktail renaissance (very early 2000s forward). The brown spirits are being used in cocktails once again, but vodka has never really went away.

It is still the world’s number one selling spirit – and for good reason.

Why Vodka?

Considering vodka’s subtle character, it has an uncanny ability to mix well with an infinite number of cocktail ingredients, and has been making its way back onto cocktail menus in bars and restaurants around the globe.

Many vodkas are even characterful enough to be enjoyed on their own.

To create these 10 essential vodka cocktails, we teamed up with Hamilton Distillery Co. to test drive their new Hamilton Distillery Premium Handcrafted Vodka in an array of some of what we feel are the best classic & modern vodka-based cocktails around today.
