Weddings are a time for celebration, and cigars make a welcome addition to such joyous events. A cigar is also the perfect excuse for the men to disappear after dinner so the women can discuss all those things that women like to discuss at weddings.
The rule of thumb I generally follow is have mild, relatively inexpensive cigars on hand. As an example, I generally lean towards the Macanudo Café series in the Hampton Court model for such occasions. These are a perfect 5.5” length and 42 ring gauge. It’s about a half-hour to an hour to smoke, and not overly thick and intimidating. These very approachable cigars are available in ten packs of tubos (tube container lined with Spanish cedar) format, so that those who choose not to smoke at that very moment can take one for the road.

After the dessert course, circle around to the tables and hand them out to those you would like to join you, beginning with the head table. Make sure not to exclude either father of the bride or groom since they’re also celebrating, and the stress of the event is mostly finished with exception typically being the speeches. Timing is critical, as after the dessert course there is typically a lull prior to speeches and the commencement of dancing.
Keep in mind that wedding party members should not be obligated to devote an hour so to a cigar, so don’t begrudge anyone who needs to bail on a half finished stick and make it known that they are free put it down whenever they see fit. Ideally you could enjoy these by the bar, but as smoking is now primarily an outdoor pursuit, aim to locate directly in front of the venue. Ensure that everyone is aware of your location should anyone need you in your absence while smoking with the group.
This experience is a time to congratulate the groom on his nuptials and the groomsmen on successfully getting him married, The cigar is a small reward for this feat, and a fine bonding experience for all those who partake.

If I’m going to be heading to a wedding, and feel a generous mood coming on, I’ll grab a bunch of Arturo Fuente ‘Curly Heads’ to hand out to a number of guests. They are inexpensive yet approachable for “non-smokers” and decent enough for an avid aficionado to enjoy as a pre/post dinner smoke…
